We want to explore the role of city regions as substate spheres of politics in the context of contemporary globalization processes. While the general mechanisms and dynamics of globalization have been analyzed rather extensively, the study of their effects has concentrated mostly on effects at the state-level and on a strictly defined range of policy fields. However, since globalization is uneven in its spread and impact, it seems obvious that not only states are being affected differently, but also the political entities within them.
The intention of our research project is to provide new insights into the relationship between globalization and governance on two different but interrelated levels of analysis. From the macro perspective, our aim is to explore new sites of global politics by analyzing the links between global city regions, „their“ national central states, and trans-national globalization. From a micro perspective, in focussing on specific city regions we want to understand the influences of local, national, and global actors and interests in selected areas of governance (policy fields). The city regions we have chosen to focus on are Johannesburg in South Africa, Mumbai in India, São Paulo in Brazil, and Shanghai in China.
The research project shall be conducted on a comparative basis and in cooperation with local partners in the respective city regions. Thus we shall be able to account for exogenous similarities (due to external, global processes) and for endogenous particularities (due to local history and national politics).
The project is financed by the Volkswagen Foundation.
